Despite a report to the contrary in early March, Joel Kinnaman and Viola Davis are now also confirmed as returning for ‘The Suicide Squad’, a followup to their 2016 DC Comics movie. It was previously reported that James Gunn‘s screenplay for ‘The Suicide Squad’, which he is also directing, only included Margot Robbie‘s Harley Quinn and Deadshot from the first picture, however, this past Monday, Jai Courtney announced that he was returning for ‘The Suicide Squad’. Now Discussing Film has confirmed that Kinnaman, who plays team leader Rick Flag, and Davis, their government sponsor Amanda Waller, are also going to be in the upcoming film.
In mid-March, producer Peter Safran insisted:
“First of all, we don’t call it Suicide Squad 2 ‘cause it’s a total reboot, so it’s The Suicide Squad and I think people should be extremely excited about it. It’s everything you would hope from a James Gunn script, and I think that says a lot and that promises a lot, and I know that we will deliver a lot.”
This followed a report that the characters that Gunn had written into his script were The Peacemaker (which he hoped to cast with his pal Dave Bautista), King Shark, Ratcatcher, and Polka-Dot Man. It is entirely possible that these characters may still appear, but it looks as though they will be sharing the screen with more of the original cast than was expected.
It makes sense to bring back Waller, as she is the mastermind behind the entire Task Force X concept. Flag is a pretty steady presence in the comics as well and he serves as the man who keeps these criminals in line.
Of the characters that survived the first movie, the only ones that haven’t been confirmed to be returning are Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) and Katana (Karen Fukuhara).
There have been reports that Gunn has also written in a large alien woman, who could be Duchess, a member of the ‘Suicide Squad’ in the comics, who turned out to be Lashina of the Female Furies. But that’s just one guess.
Another PURE GUESS is that the old team returns just to be killed off and replaced by the new characters.
What do you hope to see in ‘The Suicide Squad’?
‘The Suicide Squad’ will be released in theaters on August 6, 2021.
