Continuing HBO’s promotion for the final season of ‘Game of Thrones’ (like they really need to hype it any more) which is set to premiere next month on Sunday, April 14th, HBO has released the poster for the final season of the show.
The ‘Game of Thrones’ teaser posters have become somewhat iconic over the years, teasing the upcoming seasons with art that really sets the tone for the upcoming season, while dropping subtle hints of what is to come and/or displaying symbolic imagery that leads to many questions and theories from the fans. Season 5 had a poster with Tyrion on a ledge overlooking a dragon looming up out of the clouds, while Season 6 had faces of characters both currently alive and dead in the wall of the House Of Black Of White, while Season 2 had a hand holding up the crown amidst a shower of sparks with the tag “War is Coming.”

This year’s poster seems to hearken back to the very first poster for ‘Game of Thrones,’ which had Ned Stark sitting on the Iron Throne with the tag “You Win Or You Die,” with no one (minus the book readers) aware that the phrase was meant literally, especially for Ned, who would meet his demise at the end of the season. Season 8’s poster is a much closer shot of the Iron Throne only now it is merged with a dragon (check out the eyes at the bottom), giving the idea of a dragon being the true Iron Throne, and reminding us of Daenerys’ designs for the capturing King’s Landing and ruling all of Westeros, should she and her allies survive the coming war with the White Walkers. There is no tagline minus the words “The Final Season,” but really, at this point, they do not actually have very many people left to sell the show to. They know their fans and know they will have a massive audience to see how it all pans out.
