Dungeons And Dragons

Last month, Michael Gilio submitted his final script for ‘Dungeons and Dragons’ to Paramount, and word is that it really got execs buzzing.  While the studio gave Gilio a few notes to work on, it sounds as though the studio is looking to move forward, with a theatrical release date of November 19, 2021 already locked in.

Producer Roy Lee previously described the ‘D&D’ movie as a “‘Guardians of the Galaxy’-tone movie in a Tolkien-like universe,” and “a ‘Raiders [of the Lost Ark’] romp inside that world.”  Last spring, Chris McKay was rumored to be the frontrunner to direct, but it doesn’t seem that that worked out, or at least it hasn’t been finalized, as officially-speaking, ‘D&D’ doesn’t have a director attached.

Even so, Paramount has lofty ambitions to land a major star to lead ‘Dungeons and Dragons’.  Supposedly, the studio wants either Will Smith, Josh Brolin, Chris Pratt, Vin Diesel, Matthew McConaughey, Jamie Foxx, Joel Edgerton, Dave Bautista, Jeremy Renner, or Johnny Depp.  Honestly, this makes it seem like the script isn’t carved in stone, as these actors are all very different in style, physicality, and age.  There’s no way they could all be up for the same role.  Some of these actors have done fantasy before.  Fantasy movies are hard to make, and usually, don’t do well at the box office, so it might be hard to entice some of them to get on board with this.

Gilio wrote, directed and starred in the acclaimed 2001 indie ‘Kwik Stop’.  He also contributed to the script for another indie, 2008’s ‘Jolene’.

McKay directed ‘The LEGO Batman Movie’ and is set to helm the sequel, ‘The LEGO Batman Movie 2’.  He has been attached to direct ‘Nightwing’ for Warner Brothers, but it looks as though that movie has been placed on the back burner for the time being.  He is also attached to direct a live-action adaptation of ‘Jonny Quest’.

Stay tuned for updates.
