star wars episode 9 luke skywalker

We have all heard the rumors and, yes, even heard from Disney itself when they announced the cast last summer, that ‘Star Wars: Episode IX’ will be the end of the Skywalker saga, but fans are still wondering what exactly that means. When Oscar Isaac appeared recently on the Today Show to discuss his upcoming Netflix film ‘Triple Frontier,’ he also touched upon the subject of ‘Star Wars,’ giving his own thoughts on the notion that ‘Episode IX’ will be the end of the Skywalker Saga. In his words:

“It is the end of the entire Skywalker saga. Nine stories. This is the culmination of the thing. I think what J.J.[Abrams] has done, and really the whole Lucasfilm team, is going to be incredibly fulfilling. It’s also special for us because you get to learn a lot more things about these characters.”

If ‘Episode IX’ truly ends the story for every one of the Skywalker bloodline, does this mean that General Leia (who will appear thanks to unused footage from ‘The Force Awakens’) will die in the movie? Same goes for Kylo Ren, the only known successor to the bloodline for the new generation? Does this kill (no pun intended) any theories that Rey may still turn out to be a Skywalker, since there is a still a chance for her to appear in future films, and that would not work if she turns out to have Skywalker blood running through her veins?

At this point, it does seem like the statement is more meant to revolve around settling the Kylo Ren story, as he is following in his grandfather’s footsteps, and demonstrating once again that the Skywalker bloodline has just as much potential for darkness as light, and the galaxy might be better off without this immensely powerful, and unstable family. But it does make one wonder, are they also closing the door on future movies with the stars of the current trilogy, like Rey, Poe, and Finn? Or will we see them again?

What are your thoughts on wrapping up the story of the Skywalkers? Do you think ‘Star Wars’ is about more than the history of Anakin, Luke, Leia, and Kylo Ren? Or do you think the series will be losing an essential piece of its mythology by closing the door on the Skywalkers? Feel free to share your opinions in the comments below!
