Razzies The Golden Raspberry Awards

Amid accusations of rigging the nominations and results, The Golden Raspberry Awards were handed out as usual, on the Saturday before the Academy Awards ceremony.  While the Oscars celebrate the best of film, the Razzies are bestowed upon the worst.

This year, it looks as though the Razzies went political, meaning that sci-fi, fantasy, horror, and superhero pictures were off the hook as the Trump administration took the heat for a pair of documentaries, ‘Death of a Nation’ and ‘Fahrenheit 11/9’.  Trump “won” for Worst Actor for appearing as himself, and Worst Onscreen Duo for him and “His Self-Perpetuating Pettiness.”  Former Trump supporter Kellyanne Conway “won” for Worst Supporting Actress.

As far as actual scripted projects, the Will Ferrell/John C. Reilly flop ‘Holmes & Watson’ was the biggest “winner.”  It took home: Worst Picture, beating out ‘Gotti’, ‘The Happytime Murders’, ‘Robin Hood’, and ‘Winchester’; Worst Supporting Actor for Reilly; Worst Remake, Ripoff or Sequel; and Worst Director for Etan Cohen.

While the fantasy ‘The Happytime Murders’ managed to dodge most of its nominations, Melissa McCarthy got the Worst Actress award for the one-two punch of that picture and her other comedy dud ‘Life of the Party’, but she also got the Razzie Redeemer Award, given to praise a performer who steps away from such bad projects to turn in a great performance.  Here, she was recognized for her role in the Academy Award-nominated ‘Can You Ever Forgive Me?’.  (It’s up for Oscars for McCarthy, Supporting Actor Richard E. Grant, and Best Adapted Screenplay’.)

While the ‘Fifty Shades’ franchise has traditionally been lambasted by the Golden Raspberries, this year, it got off kind of easy, only being singled out for Worst Screenplay.
