The Happytime Murders Golden Raspberry Award Nominations

On the eve of the Oscar nomination announcements, the Golden Raspberry Award (or Razzies) noms are out.  These “prizes” are annually given out to the worst movies of the previous year and just like with the nomination announcements, the actual awards are given out just prior to the big budget Oscars gala.

The Golden Raspberries are funny, but they tend to target low-hanging fruit, which usually equals big-budget sci-fi, fantasy and superhero flops, but this year, most films in those categories escaped Scott free.  While Melissa McCarthy is nominated twice for Worst Actress, for ‘Happytime Murders’ and ‘Life of the Party, ‘Aquaman’‘s weakest-link Amber Heard was not nominated for that picture, but only for the little-seen thriller ‘London Fields’.  Ditto for her ex-boyfriend, Johnny Depp who was not singled out for bigger-budget flick, ‘Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald’, even after fans turned their noses up at his casting.  Instead, he was only mentioned for ‘Sherlock Gnomes’.

The Razzies also hold grudges, so most of its ire this year is directed at repeat offenders, McCarthy and ‘Happytime Murders’, Will Ferrell and John C. Riley for ‘Holmes & Watson’, Depp (who I think is nominated EVERY year), John Travolta and his dud ‘Gotti’, and perhaps most obviously, Donald J. Trump, Melania Trump and Kellyanne Conway for the documentaries ‘Fahrenheit 11/9’ and ‘Death of a Nation’.

While the Razzies have dogged the ‘Fifty Shades’ franchise since the beginning, ‘Fifty Shades Freed’ was only included in the Worst Director and Worst Screenplay categories.  But that could have more to do with the fact that no one gives a crap about this series anymore.

Notable duds like ‘Pacific Rim: Uprising’, ‘A Wrinkle in Time’, ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’, ‘Welcome to Marwen’ and ‘Mortal Engines’ all slipped under the Razzies’ radar this year, despite mixed-to-poor reviews and weak box office performance.  Even ‘Venom’ escaped their wrath.
