Before heading back to fictional Derry, ME this fall for the big-budget adaptation ‘It: Chapter Two’, you can travel back to 1990 to venture behind-the-scenes of the classic TV miniseries version, which starred Tim Curry as Pennywise, spoiling clowns for an entire generation.  And you can help fellow ‘It’ fans do the same, by supporting the release of ‘Pennywise: The Story of It’, a documentary that explores all of the behind-the-scenes endeavors that helped craft the original adaptation of  Stephen King’s bestselling novel.

Directed by Chris Griffiths, ‘Pennywise: The Story of It’ includes interviews with Curry, several of his costars including Richard Thomas (adult Bill), Seth Green (young Richie), Emily Perkins (young Beverly), and Tim Reid (adult Mike), director/co-writer Tommy Lee Wallace, special effects supervisor Gene Warren, and more.  These commentaries offer insight into Curry’s acting method (it involves a lot of chain-smoking), and the making of the infamous spider monster that appears at the climax.  As Wallace puts it:

“We had champagne ideas on a beer budget.”

But even though the miniseries hasn’t held up that well, thanks to such budgetary restraints and the use of TV actors, some of whom didn’t have much experience, it is still a classic piece of horror filmmaking, and Curry’s performance is one for the ages.

Here is the documentary’s description:

From the makers of ‘You’re so cool, Brewster! The Story of Fright Night’ and ‘RoboDoc: The Creation of RoboCop’ and the director of ‘Unearthed & Untold: The Path to Pet Path to Pet Sematary’ comes this brand-new documentary celebrating the legacy of ‘Stephen King’s IT’ and the legend Tim Curry. With over 30 interviews and hours of behind the scenes footage, this is YOUR opportunity to support this independent project and make it a reality.
