Sony Announces Release Dates For Ghostbusters And Morbius

It looks like Sony wants to turn July into “BOO-ly” as it has scheduled two potential spooky blockbusters for next summer– the new ‘Ghostbusters’ and ‘Morbius’.  ‘Ghostbusters’ will bust up theaters on July 10, 2020, while ‘Morbius’ will drain filmgoers’ wallets on July 31st.

‘Ghostbusters’ will be directed by Jason Reitman— the son of Ivan, director of the first two– with a script he wrote with Gil Kenan.  This picture is set in the same continuity as the two ’80s movies but will focus on a younger cast– possibly teenagers.  This project was just announced a couple of weeks ago, so not much is known for certain, but original cast member Ernie Hudson stated that he has not been approached to appear in it.  Original star Dan Aykroyd was working independently on a different ‘Ghostbusters’ reboot, so it’s unclear how he will react to this other take.  Most of the original cast made cameos in the poorly-received 2016 reboot with an all-female lead cast.

As for ‘Morbius’, that will be Sony’s next installment of their Spider-Man-based films, following ‘Venom’.  ‘Venom’ was a smash, so that bodes well for another live action film. in this franchise  Daniel Espinosa (‘Safe House’) is directing, with a script by the creators of Netflix’s ‘Lost in Space’ series, Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless.  Jared Leto will star as the titular character, with Adria Alphona expected to portray his love interest Martine Bancroft and with Matt Smith in a mystery role.  In the film, Michael Morbius is a scientist with a rare blood disease.  An attempt to cure him winds up transforming him into a vampire-like creature.  In the comics, Morbius has been both a hero and a villain, so expect the film to walk the line, similar to the tone of ‘Venom’.

In order to make these new release dates, production needs to begin soon.  Check back for more information as it arrives.
