Star Wars Episode IX

Believe it or not, there is a ‘Star Wars’ movie coming out later this year. You would not know it by the lack of marketing and promotion for the movie thus far, which many are attributing to Lucasfilm and Disney keeping a tight lid on the project due to the fact that it is the FINAL chapter in the Skywalker saga and wanting to ensure they build up as much hype and excitement as possible with this one (especially considering the commercial and critical flop ‘Solo‘ was, the last ‘Star Wars’ film the studio produced, though that was not a “saga” film and did not feature any of the original cast members).  Fans have a lot of big questions in regards to ‘Episode IX,’ especially since ‘The Last Jedi’ managed to kill off both Luke Skywalker and ‘Snoke,’ two characters who everyone thought would have major opposing roles in the final chapter of the saga.

Now, it seems fresh actors are being brought in for as-yet unnamed roles that fans are very excited about, especially since one of them is Richard E. Grant, whose thespian skills make him ideal for any number of characters from the old Legacy ‘Star Wars’ canon they would like to see brought to life in this final chapter. Of course, there was also the thought that Kind MIGHT be playing a character we have already seen in a previous movie (i.e. one of the earlier trilogies), only aged up about 30 years, though that rumor has since been shot down by the actor himself.

When talking to the Radiotimes about the new character he is playing (as opposed to playing a character already established in a previous movie), Grant stated:

“I hadn’t thought of it like that, but the character is just mine! I don’t know about the action figure or whether there will be one, but this is pretty amazing.”

Of course, the big fan rumor was that Kind might be playing fan-favorite villain Grand Admiral Thrawn, who we have yet to see on the big screen, though he turned out to be the primary antagonist on the animated series ‘Star Wars: Rebels.’ When asked whether that might be the case, Grant sadly replied:

“I’m not playing the Star Wars character you just mentioned…I’m not allowed to tell you anything. Otherwise I would be fired.”

Though he was very short on details, Grant did promise that it will all be worth it when ‘Episode 9’ finally premieres and audiences see what Lucasfilm and JJ Abrams have cooked up for audiences. In his words:

“Oh, it’s definitely worth it. If you’re a Star Wars fan, and I am, then knowing what’s coming in this is quite something. I absolutely understand why they’re so secretive about it,because it’s very exciting. Yes, I am in the last Star Wars. I have no idea [if I’ll be recognizable [to die-hard fans]] because I’ve not even been allowed to tell my family what the name of my character is. If I told you I would get fired. We’re not even allowed to take the script home. There is a lot of security.”

I certainly hope whatever Abrams and company have come up with is worth the wait and all this hype, as they have a lot to live up to here. With ‘The Last Jedi’ not quite being the movie everyone was expecting and leaving a lot of hanging plot-lines, plus the burden of being ‘the final saga film,’ ‘Episode IX’ has a massive burden on its shoulders, though if anyone can stick the landing, it will be JJ Abrams. Casting Richard E. Grant was a solid move, and I cannot wait to see him in action, no matter what character he is playing, even if it is someone we have never seen or heard of before (though I do still kind of hope he is a character from the old-canon).

Do you have any other thoughts on who Grant might be playing? Or do you still think he might be playing Thrawn, especially since they spent so much time setting him up in ‘Rebels’? Feel free to share your thoughts and theories in the comments below!
