In a brief report from Deadline, it was announced that Channing Tatum had parted ways with his management teams. According to this report, Tatum is still trying to make ‘Gambit’ happen at 20th Century Fox and may go so far as to direct the picture himself, after the film has already lost three– Rupert Wyatt (‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’), Doug Liman (‘Edge of Tomorrow’), and Gore Verbinksi (the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ franchise).  If it happens, ‘Gambit’ would mark Tatum’s directorial debut.

Unfortunately, this news follows the rumor last week that this picture, along with any other unmade Fox movies based on the ‘X-Men’ and ‘Fantastic Four’ had been permanently shelved, as Disney will assume control of Fox and all of its assets this year, with the ‘X-Men’ and ‘Fantastic Four’ being integrated into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  In fact, there remain questions as to the fate of two movies that have already been made, ‘Dark Phoenix’ and ‘New Mutants’.  The latest buzz is that ‘New Mutants’ will wind up going to Hulu.  But none of this is currently confirmed by Fox, so there could still be hope, even for ‘Gambit’.

Tatum has been attached to star in and produce ‘Gambit’ since 2014, but the project has never seemed very close to becoming a reality.  In addition to the rotating director’s chair, the script has also been overhauled a few times, with the tone shifting.  After ‘Deadpool’ and ‘Logan’ word emerged that ‘Gambit’ was being retooled to be rated-R.  The latest buzz was that it was going to be a sexy romantic comedy.

One potential solution would be if Disney and Marvel Studios decided they were interested in Tatum still doing the ‘Gambit’ film for them, as part of their continuity.  But that seems unlikely, as Marvel plays everything so close to the vest and the idea of Tatum playing Gambit has been out there for years.  It’s old news.
