Tolkien

“In a hole in the ground, there lives a hobbit.” With that introduction, we would see J.R.R. Tolkien forever change the world of fantasy as he threw us head first into the story of ‘The Hobbit.’ Tolkien’s own life was just as fascinating as the novels and Fox Searchlight is finally releasing a biopic on the man titled ‘Tolkien.’ I say finally because this has been in development since the Fall of 2013.

Originally, the author who would pen ‘The Lord of the Rings’ was going to have a feature on how his friendships at Pembroke College and his time as a soldier in World War I had shaped his life. The synopsis reveals that this is still the case, but it will also show how these events directly affected his writing and the stories he is known for.

The synopsis for this biopic is below:

Tolkien explores the formative years of the orphaned author as he finds friendship, love and artistic inspiration among a group of fellow outcasts at school. This takes him into the outbreak of World War I, which threatens to tear the “Fellowship” apart. All of these experiences would inspire Tolkien to write his famous Middle-earth novels.

This look at the esteemed author is being directed by Dome Karukoski (‘Tom of Finland’) and was written by David Gleeson and Stephen Beresford. It also features a robust cast that includes Nicholas Hoult, Lily Collins, Colm Meaney, Anthony Boyle, Patrick Gibson, Tom Glynn-Carney, Craig Roberts, Laura Donnelly, Genevieve O’Reilly, Pam Ferris, and Derek Jacobi. It was produced by Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, David Ready, and Kris Thykier.
