While the Skrulls have a long and sordid history with humanity, comic readers that have kept up with these alien shapeshifters that are now being introduced on the big screen in ‘Captain Marvel‘ can’t think of them without remembering the 2008 story “Secret Invasion.” The plot of this in this one shows that these aliens aren’t just more dangerous than Earth’s Mightiest Heroes have thought in the past but that they’ve had a longterm plan which could very easily have succeeded.
Now, it looks like some of what is being introduced in ‘Captain Marvel’ may be leading towards that story arc coming to life in a future “Avengers” movie. Executive Producer Jonathan Schwartz was asked about a potential “Secret Invasion” happening and stated that:
That’s cool right? Yes, we talked about Secret Invasion. I wouldn’t go into this movie saying ‘Which one of these superheroes is a Skrull?” Because Carol’s is more or less the first superhero to show up on Earth. But are we planting seeds for future movies? Always.”
If the Skrulls had started a secret invasion already, it could very well mean that some of the heroes we’ve seen so far might not be who they’ve seemed to be. For those unfamiliar with the story, it all started when Electra ended up being killed and suddenly reverting to reveal that she was a Skrull. Soon after it is discovered that many areas of the human government, S.H.I.E.L.D., and a slew of superheroes and villains have been replaced by Skrulls in a secret bid to take over the Earth.
Many of those who were shown to be Skrulls in the comics have yet to be introduced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe quite yet though Hank Pym is one character who has been. It also wouldn’t come as a surprise if we see a few other characters end up being introduced or replaced by the time this story sees the light of day if it were actually to happen as hinted at above.
