BrightBurn James Gunn

What has James Gunn been up to?  Now we know!  After Marvel dumped him the day before San Diego Comic-Con kicked off, fans wondered when the director of the two ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ flicks would resurface.  Gunn did not direct, but served as producer of the upcoming film ‘BrightBurn’, which is described as a “superhero horror movie.”  ‘The Hive”s David Yarovesky directed with a script from Brian Gunn (James’ brother) and Mark Gunn (their cousin).  James Gunn had originally planned to announce ‘BrightBurn’ at SDCC with its release slated for November, but it has obviously been pushed back to next Memorial Day.

“What if a child from another world crash-landed on Earth, but instead of becoming a hero to mankind, he proved to be something far more sinister?  With Brightburn, the visionary filmmaker of Guardians of the Galaxy and Slither presents a startling, subversive take on a radical new genre: superhero horror.”

Indeed, this movie seems more than a little inspired by Superman, with Elizabeth Banks in the Martha Kent role, and David Denman as her Jonathan-like husband.  (Banks and Denman previously costarred in another superhero film, ‘Power Rangers‘ but didn’t share any scenes.)  But Jackson A. Dunn is no wallflower Clark Kent.

One of James Gunn’s earliest successes was the horror movie ‘Slither’ and he produced the acclaimed sleeper hit ‘The Belko Experiment’ in 2016.  This also won’t be his first dark experimentation of the superhero genre.  A few years before he was handed the keys to ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’, Gunn directed the low-budget dark comedy ‘Super’ starring Rainn Wilson and Ellen Page as a wrench-wielding homemade hero and his sidekick, respectively.

As far as directing, Gunn is expected to direct the sequel to ‘Suicide Squad’ for Warner Brothers.

What do you think?  Can you handle this evil take on Superman?
