Dr. Mirage

The CW is trying again with an adaptation of Valiant Comics’ ‘Dr. Mirage’.  Created by Bob Layton and Bernard Chang, ‘Dr, Mirage’ features Carmen Mirage, a paranormal investigator who can communicate with the dead, except for the one she truly wants to reach, her deceased husband Hwen… until she stumbles on a case which teases the possibility of her finally contacting him.

The project is being developed by ‘Reign’ co-creator Laurie McCarthy, along with DMG Entertainment and CBS Television Studios.  Gary Dauberman (‘Annabelle’, ‘IT’, DC Universe’s upcoming ‘Swamp Thing’) previously attempted to bring ‘Dr. Mirage’ to life on The CW for the 2016-17 season and McCarthy is said to be using Dauberman’s script as the foundation for her own.

McCarthy’s co-creation ‘Reign’ aired on The CW for four seasons from 2013-17.  ‘Dr. Mirage’ brings her back into the realm of the supernatural, as she previously worked as co-executive producer of CBS’ ‘Ghost Whisperer’.  She got her start as a co-producer on the original ‘Beverly Hills, 90210’, and subsequently worked on ‘Felicity’, ‘CSI: Miami’ and ‘Windfall’.

The CW is no stranger to comic book adaptations.  Its lineup is dominated by shows imported from DC Comics— ‘Arrow’, ‘The Flash’, ‘Legends of Tomorrow’ and ‘Supergirl’, all of which exist in the same Arrowverse, plus ‘Black Lightning’ which exists separately.  The CW is even reportedly considering more DC shows.  ‘Project 13’ was reported to be in development last fall, with Elizabeth Banks attached, however not a peep has been heard about that since.  With the upcoming ‘Elseworlds’ crossover, however, The CW is considering spin-off shows featuring ‘Batwoman’ and ‘Superman’.

Also wrapping up is the series ‘iZombie’ based on the DC/Vertigo series of the same name.  And while it isn’t a superhero show, ‘Riverdale’ also has roots in comics– Archie Comics, of course.

Should the ‘Dr. Mirage’ series come to fruition, it will be the first such live-action adaption based on a Valiant property.  On the film side, ‘Bloodshot’ is currently in post-production to be released in February of 2020.  A ‘Harbinger’ movie is also in the works.
