It’s official. Margot Robbie has revealed the full name of Warner Brothers’ ‘Birds of Prey’ and it’s a doozy: ‘Birds of Prey: The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn’. Robbie made the announcement via Instagram, where she posted a photo of the movie’s script, by Christina Hodson, with the added subtitle handwritten punctuated with a lipstick kiss. But she was not just having fun. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that this is indeed the full title of the movie.
Robbie is both starring in the picture as Harley Quinn and serving as producer. Warner Brothers was keen to bring Robbie’s Harley back to the big screen after she proved to be the most popular character in ‘Suicide Squad’. At one point, there were four separate movies in the works– a solo entry, a movie co-starring Jared Leto’s Joker, ‘Gotham City Sirens’ which may have teamed Harley with other female villains, and ‘Birds of Prey’. For her part, Robbie wanted to surround Harley with other female characters in order to play off them and sought a diverse cast. (Note, some of the other movies appear to still be in the works.)
For (inhale) ‘Birds of Prey: The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn’, Harley will align herself with The Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) and Gotham City police officer Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez) in order to save young Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco) from ruthless crime boss Roman Sionis, a.k.a. Black Mask (Ewan McGregor). The events of this film are said to take place after Harley breaks things off with “Mistah J” and she is in need of a distraction. Cathy Yan is directing this R-rated entry into the DC film universe.
What do you think of the new title? Is it too much, or does this perfectly live up to Harley’s outrageous personality?
Winstead recently disclosed that filming was set to begin in January. The movie is due in theaters on February 7, 2020.
