Fans of ‘Firefly‘ will forever be crushed that the series never was able to continue, but thankfully Joss Whedon was able to expand The Verse in multiple comics since that time. He started to tell the future of the crew in ‘Serenity: Those Left Behind’ and in the next round of comics by Boom! Studios we’ll be learning a bit about its past.

Finally, after all of these years, we’re going to find out about “a secret history” of Malcolm Reynolds and Zoë when the events from the Unification War are delivered to fans. We’ve seen the trauma and allusions of the struggles these two went through, but now the experience is coming to light which turned Reynolds from a man into a soldier into a leader.

Greg Pak (‘Planet Hulk’) is handling the writing for this outing while Dan McDaid will be tackling the artwork.

We’ll see things kick off with the crew of the Serenity pulling a heist that goes wrong. However, what is unusual about this outing is that Mal is going to be thrown into his past where we find that the “Traitor of Serenity Valley” ends up being revealed and everything about the War for Unification, Mal and Zoe’s time as Browncoats, and more starts to unravel.

From Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Avengers) comes a new era of Firefly, as the definitive story of the Unification War is told at last!

Captain Malcolm Reynolds thought he could outrun his past, but when a simple heist goes wrong, he’s forced to confront it. With the fabled Traitor of Serenity Valley in his sights, Mal’s quest for revenge will put him at odds with his own crew, forcing him to make a choice: fix the past or fight for the future.

Along with Whedon, writer Greg Pak (Mech Cadet Yu, Totally Awesome Hulk, Weapon X) and artist Dan McDaid (Judge Dredd: Mega-City Zero) take you back to the battleground where it all began…and reveal a secret history that might end it all.

We’ve also got a couple of preview pages to share with you below.

It is clear that this won’t cause a rift that will tear the crew apart for good as this happens at some point prior to the events in ‘Serenity,’ but I’m curious to see what new twists are about to be introduced.
