Black Mirror

Oh, did the internet overreact to something?  Whaaaaat?!  What makes this case ironic is that the internet is overreacting to comments made regarding ‘Black Mirror’, the anthology series that explores humanity’s involvement with and reliance on technology.

In the new book ‘Inside Black Mirror’, the show’s creator Charlie Brooker discussed the possibility of revisiting past episodes and further exploring those worlds and characters.  He specifically discussed the Season Two installment, ‘White Bear,’ in which a character named Victoria, played by Lenora Crichlow, was forced to endure psychological torture every day as punishment for her role in the abduction, torture, and murder of a child.  Brooker stated that it might be interesting to revisit the story to find out what could happen if Victoria realizes she is trapped in this torture loop.  As Brooker said, “That was something we discussed at the time, as a potential expansion of the story.  What if she becomes aware that this is going on, and starts rebelling against it?”

He also mentioned the Emmy Award-winning Season 3 episode ‘San Junipero‘, stating that while there probably wouldn’t be a direct sequel, but it might be interesting to revisit this reality, “if there was a compelling reason to do so.”

But the Internet read these comments as “THE UPCOMING SEASON OF BLACK MIRROR IS TOTALLY, 100% GOING TO INCLUDE SEQUELS TO ‘WHITE BEAR’ AND ‘SAN JUNIPERO’!!!!!”

When grilled about these possibilities, Brooker tweeted, “nope.”  That tweet and the question he was replying to have since been deleted.  Some see that as a hint that the idea of sequels may not be too far off the mark.  But it’s unlikely that these follow-up episodes will arrive in the next batch.

The fifth season of ‘Black Mirror’ will arrive in December and will include one episode that employs a new “choose your own adventure” format, that will allow viewers to determine the course of a storyline.

Would you like to see episodes that revisit the worlds already shown in the series?  If so, which ones?
