Star Trek: Short Teks: Calypso

We know that a slew of ‘Star Trek: Short Treks‘ is coming and the first trailer for “Calypso” is promising that we’ll see a 1,000-year time jump! I know the idea behind these are stand-alone features of characters that will likely live in a bubble, but I can’t lie when I say that this one looks like a “Star Trek” story which I’d like to see take place in a feature film. Not only would it show us a potentially long-running future of “Star Trek,” assuming that it isn’t a dream, but it feels like it deserves a longer story from this brief teaser. The short will take place 1,000 years after the events of ‘Star Trek: Discovery‘ in 3256 and outside of that we only seem to see the character Craft alone with an AI who just laughs at him.

The story itself is only briefly described below:

Check out this teaser for the next of the Short Treks, “Calypso.” After waking up in an unfamiliar sickbay, Craft (Aldis Hodge) finds himself onboard a deserted ship, and his only companion and hope for survival is an A.I. computer interface.

Craft is a new character being introduced in the “Star Trek” universe, and it isn’t clear if he will end up traveling back in time to show up on ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ or is currently caught up in the future somehow. It also isn’t evident from what we know if this could be after his time on Discovery assuming he does make it on the ship at some point.

The episode was directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi and penned by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Michael Chabon. It looks like it could be the perfect setup for a mini-horror film set in the “Star Trek” universe from the teaser but only time will tell once it is released.
