With James Gunn having been fired from Marvel Studios by Disney, it was only a matter of time before a new director for ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ was selected. Now a new rumored shortlist of who the studio is eyeing has appeared. With the film delayed indefinitely delayed and Dave Bautista possibly not returning for the next outing if Gunn’s script was also cut from the film, this hasn’t been an easy time for Marvel Studios.
So who could replace Gunn and help define not just the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ but most of the galactic side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe? The latest rumor has four female directors up for the job and they are Dee Rees, Michelle McLaren, Jane Campion, and S.J. Clarkson.
Rees is best known for her work on ‘Mudbound’ and has done quite a few shorts and a few longer pieces in there as well. When ‘Black Panther‘ came out the director shared that it was “the best movie Marvel has ever made.”
Next up is Michelle McLaren who generally works on television. That being said, she has worked on shows such as ‘Breaking Bad,’ ‘Game of Thrones‘, and ‘Westworld‘ so she easily has a handle on the genre. Previously, she was also attached to direct ‘Wonder Woman’ before Patty Jenkins got the job and was currently slated to direct Starlord himself, Chris Pratt, in ‘Cowboy Ninja Viking.’
With Jane Campion, we have an Academy Award-winner in the mix for her work on ‘The Piano.’ Campion has directed quite a few works over the years, though science fiction and comedy aren’t too high in her past body of work.
S.J. Clarkson has already worked in the Marvel Universe by delivering some stunning material in Netflix’s ‘Jessica Jones’ and on the sci-fi end of things is slated to tackle ‘Star Trek 4‘ if contract negotiations ever pan out with the cast. I believe of the four she might be the best bet to tackle this job.
With all rumors, it is hard to say if this list is at all accurate but everyone listed has some fantastic talent behind them.
