Starfire's Outfit Makes More Sense After Seeing The First Episode Of 'Titans'

SPOILER ALERT: This article discusses the premiere episode of DC Universe’s ‘Titans’, so if you have not seen it yet and want to avoid SPOILERS, you may want to turn back now.

Now that ‘Titans’ has premiered, fans have a better understanding as to why Starfire (Anna Diop) appears to be dressed as some disco hooker in all of the images that have been revealed so far.  It turns out, it’s because she… kind of is a disco hooker.  Or at least she is pretending to be.

After the first episode, Starfire’s true nature and history is still mostly a mystery, including to herself.  She wakes up with amnesia in the wreckage of a car, in Vienna, Austria.  The driver has been shot dead.

After finding her way back to her hotel, she discovers a man that she has apparently beaten and interrogated.  She slowly pieces things together, which is difficult because it seems she has multiple identities and has essentially been living a lie.  How does she figure out who she really is when no one around her knows who that is?  She figures out that she has been in an intimate relationship with a club owner named Konstantin Kovar, or has at least been pretending to be.

(Quick aside, I immediately recognized the name Konstantin Kovar as the alter ego of former Titan, the Russian hero Red Star, but it wasn’t until watching the episode that I remembered that in his earlier appearances, he actually went by the name Starfire.  I see what you did, ‘Titans’.)

She goes to his European disco, where everybody is wearing shiny, skimpy, skin-tight clothes, so she blends right in.

There are still mysteries, though.  Who is Starfire working for?  Why is she seeking Raven?

I had read a description of the pilot episode on Reddit and it was very close to what ended up being in the episode.  That description indicated that Starfire wears a variety of outfits and wigs during the series, as part of her disguises.

The first episode was just set up.  There is still a lot of story to tell.  Reportedly, after the initial storyline, Starfire will switch to different garments and will eventually wind up in a costume that resembles what she wears in the comics.  The character has had a few different looks, so it remains to be seen what she winds up in.

As Diop said recently:

“As soon as I put it on, everyone was flipping out.  It’s awesome because it’s something that so many people have seen for so long and it means so much to people and this is the first time we’re bringing it to life, but you know — our story takes its time. It takes its time, it’s an origin story, so it takes its time in the characters coming to this place where you see them and the way that everyone’s always known. I hope that the audience can be patient with us and have fun with us. It’s a ride, and it’s a fun one.”

If you’ve seen it, what do you think of ‘Titans’ so far?

‘Titans’ is available on the DC Universe streaming service.  New episodes will be released each Friday.
