We know that adaptations are often different from their source material so if you’ve been wondering how ‘The Witcher‘ plans to stay true to its roots, this will be an insight that you’ll enjoy reading. With casting finally coming together, showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich is starting to open up more as to her plans for the series. She has always been rather straightforward on wanting to stay true to the source material and now has given a few more details when it comes to her decision to do so.

For those who are worried that the upcoming Netflix series is planning on changing up some of the characters in drastic ways, you can rest easy:

“One of the things I feel most strongly about is people being afraid that we’re going to strip out the cultural context of The Witcher, to remove its Slavic roots, the very thing people in Poland are proud of. That couldn’t be further from the truth. What I’ve always wanted to do is take these Slavic stories and give them a global audience.”

While we clearly won’t know how this plays out visually until promotional shots or a teaser is released, that should hopefully comfort some fans who are worried. However, one change could come into the picture is from another series completely. It is hard to think of fantasy television these days without factoring in the video games which are what initially brought the series to much of its global audience.

“It does muddy the water a little bit for me. I’m a huge fan of the games. That being said, what I really tried to steer away from is that the video games right now are the sole visual representation of these stories and we needed to create our own visual representation. As I’ve been developing the series I’ve actually pulled back from playing the video games because I wanted to make sure the show we were creating was its own unique thing.”

While many fans jumping into this may have come from only having played the video games, it is probably a good course to be as true to the books as possible. After all, we all know how disappointing just about every live adaption of a video game has done to date.
