Bradley Whitford

Expect a lot more of Commander Joseph Lawrence in the third season of Hulu’s ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’, as Bradley Whitford has been elevated to series regular.  Lawrence showed up for the last two episodes of Season Two and was revealed to be an economist who had played a major role in the creation of Gilead.  However, despite that, he attempted to help June/Offred (Elisabeth Moss) and Emily/Ofglenn (Alexis Bledel) escape the oppressive society, even though June chose to remain behind to search for her daughter.  Most likely, his presence will help flesh out the backstory of Gilead and show how this society rose in power.

Executive producer Bruce Miller previously discussed Whitford’s character, saying:

“I think we’re going to learn a ton about him. He’s our Oppenheimer character — the man who designed an atomic bomb and then saw what it could do. He’s the designer of Gilead, and now he’s seen what it can do. So he is a mass of contradiction and dangers… now that June has crossed paths with him, she’s going to cross paths with him a lot more in Season 3.”

Whitford is currently filming Nation Geographic’s ‘Valley of the Boom’ which is due to air in January.  Whitford’s character, James L. Barksdale, is the main character.  In May, he will appear on the big screen in ‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters‘.  He may be best remembered as Josh Lyman on ‘The West Wing’ and went on to appear on ‘Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip’, ‘The Good Guys’, ‘Trophy Wife’, ‘Happyish’, ‘Transparent’ and ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’.  He won Emmy Awards for his roles on ‘The West Wing’ and ‘Transparent’.  He has also appeared in the films ‘The Cabin in the Woods’, ‘Saving Mr. Banks’, ‘Get Out’, ‘The Post’ and he just wrapped the Netflix biopic ‘Sergio’.

At this time, it has not been revealed when Season Three of ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ will begin production or will air.
