Titans

Perhaps the least visible member of the live-action ‘Titans’ so far has been Beast Boy, played by Ryan Potter.  But that changes now that DC Universe has unveiled a new trailer that focuses mainly on him and shows his physical transformation.  He even has his own theme music!

“Tigers have always been my favorite,” he declares and sure enough, the clip shows him in tiger mode quite a bit.  The first trailer for ‘Titans’ ruffled many feathers when Robin snarled “F*** Batman.”  It seems that ‘Titans’ doesn’t stop at adult language.  On this series, when Beast Boy turns into an animal, then back to human, he is without clothing, prompting Robin (Brenton Thwaites) to question, “Do you have to be naked?”

Since ‘Titans’ is live action, it makes sense to explain that by shapeshifting, Beast Boy loses his clothes.  What remains intact is his sense of humor, which is also showcased in this new clip.

Does it look great?  No.  The tiger effects are pretty cheesy and super fake.  But this is a TV show with a certain budget, so this is probably the best that they could come up with.  And using real tigers would be really expensive and dangerous, not to mention the fact that they tend not to take direction well.  Budget constraints may also mean that Beast Boy’s transformations will be limited to just a few animals.

That may explain why he doesn’t have green skin.  He actually appears to have green skin mid-transformation, but it reverts to a normal color once he is in full-human mode.  This may be temporary, however, as it is rumored that by the end of the first season, Potter’s Beast Boy will have green skin full time.

At the beginning of ‘Titans’, Beast Boy is still a member of the Doom Patrol, who we already know will be spinning off into their own series on DC Universe.  According to executive producer Geoff Johns, ‘Titans’ will explain how Garfield Logan transitions from one team to another.

“We’ll meet him with another surrogate family, and we’ll see why he would choose to get involved with the Titans — or Dick and Rachel, specifically.  He’s a fun character. He’s one of the best characters to write. I love writing Gar, and Ryan Potter plays him amazingly well.”

‘Titans’ also stars Brenton Thwaites, Anna Diop, and Teagan Croft and will be available on DC Universe starting on October 12.
