You know that BBC feels that they’ve got a hit on their hands when they order a second season of a series before the first is even complete and that is just what happened to ‘His Dark Materials.’ Of course, it isn’t too surprising that the network believes that they’ve got a hit on their hands by giving Bad Wolf and New Line production this second season pickup with the pure talent that it will be putting in front of the camera.
The cast is star-studded and includes the likes of James McAvoy, Dafne Keen, Ruth Wilson, and Lin-Manuel Miranda while Tom Hooper is directing based on a script by Jack Thorne. Also in the cast are Will Keen (‘Wolf Hall’), Georgina Campbell (‘Black Mirror’), Anne-Marie Duff (‘Shameless’), and Ian Gelder (‘Game of Thrones.’)
Filming has only begun this month at Wolf Studios Wales in Cardiff but has to be going well with this already going through. A budget for the project hasn’t been shared, but it is thought to be one of the highest priced British scripted series to be put into production.
The series will be based upon Philip Pullman’s trilogy, ‘Northern Lights,’ ‘The Subtle Knife,’ and ‘The Amber Spyglass.’ Viewers will follow Lyra and Will who are two children that wander through parallel universes. The duo must deal with physics, philosophy, and theology in worlds where witches and fantastic beasts are alive. We know that Keen is set to play Lyra and it isn’t clear if Will has yet to be cast or will be changed for the adaptation.
