Child's Play

With ‘Child’s Play‘ co-creator Don Mancini working on a new television series in development that follows the original films, it seems like a waste for a reboot to happen, but it is and we’ve got the first details of it to share with you. The idea behind the film will have an AI doll coming to life and going on a murder rampage. So while it still deals with killer dolls, it is a pretty different premise past that.

Different enough to likely have gone over better with potential fans if it hadn’t tried to use the original name from the franchise.

In the new movie, instead of a serial killer sending his spirit into a Good Guy Doll, we’re going to see a character named “Chen” who is a “Chinese factory worker who commits suicide shortly after re-programming a Buddy doll to have no limitations.” So, the new Chucky will be a defective ‘Buddy doll’ whose programming code was hacked so that he has no limitations to learning and also violence.

We’ll also see the central child who gets this doll named Andy, and he’ll be “clever and quirky. Socially awkward but in an endearing way. He also has a clunky old hearing aid in his ear.” His mother Karen is “a bit of a mess but loves her son very much. She lives in a small apartment and has a job at a superstore that sells Buddy dolls. By chance, she takes home the dysfunctional Buddy doll before it is returned to the factory, as she can’t afford a birthday gift for her son.”

They are hitting a lot of the same plot points as the original film.

Honestly, I do love the idea of an AI gone wrong, but the fact that they’re making this into a complete reboot of a franchise that is still actively being developed is just annoying.
