Spider-Man

When Sony and Marvel first announced their plans to join forces in order to get Spider-Man into the MCU proper so fans could finally see the web-slinger up on the big-screen fighting alongside the Avengers, there was a lot of excitement. Both companies saw the potential for how lucrative the partnership could be. Now, after Spidey has appeared in ‘Captain America: Civil War’ (where he first appeared as portrayed by Tom Holland and made a big splash with fans), a stand-alone film in ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ where he was mentored by Tony Stark, and an adventure with Tony Stark, Doctor Strange, and The Guardians Of the Galaxy in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ (which sadly saw him die by Thanos’s hand…er, snap), the deal clearly has turned out better than either Sony or Marvel thought. Fans have loved all of Spidey’s appearances, and both studios are making good money on the character being in the MCU, which is why Sony appears interesting in allowing more of Spidey’s catalog into the MCU (apparently said catalog of characters that Sony owns rights to includes about 900 comic-book characters).

According to a new report by Variety magazine, the deal for Spider-Man between Marvel and Sony has strengthened the partnership between the two studios, encouraging Sony to open the doors for more characters to come into the MCU, hopefully with the same results. It seems they may also want to see some Avengers appearing in some of their own Spidey-verse films, though whether that means those films are part of the MCU proper and the “Avengers” have to be the actual MCU ones, or whether they are separate from the MCU and Sony is merely asking for the rights to do, say, their own version of “Iron Man” to cameo in one of their films is anyone’s guess at this point.

To be fair, I’m not sure how many big Spider-Man characters Sony has left that could reasonably merit trading an ‘Avengers’ cameo in a Spider-verse film, but it all depends on what Kevin Feige and the folks at Marvel have in mind for the future.

What are your thoughts on the new proposal? Can you think of any Spider-Man characters that the MCU really needs? Feel free to share your ideas in the comments below!
