‘The Flash’ won’t be the only DC hero to star on a CW live action series and in an unattached film. Warner Brothers have revealed that Oren Uziel (‘The Cloverfield Paradox’) is working in a script for a movie starring ‘Supergirl’. Things appear to be at very early stage, as there is no producer attached.
Helen Slater played Supergirl in a 1984 movie, which is expected to be available to stream on the DC Universe service which arrives this fall. And of course, Melissa Benoist stars as Supergirl on The CW series which is going into its fourth season. Presumably, like ‘The Flash’, ‘Supergirl’ will be part of the larger DC Universe of movies and not connected to the TV shows.
Supergirl is Superman’s cousin, Kara Zor-El and shares his same powers, flight, super strength, invulnerability, heat, and X-ray vision, freezing breath and more. Both heroes gain their powers from yellow solar energy. In the original comics, she used the human aliases Linda Lee and later Linda Danvers, but on The CW’s series, she goes by Kara Danvers.
One of the reasons why the 1984 movie was unsuccessful is because Christopher Reeve’s Superman didn’t appear in it. Though there is no confirmation, presumably Henry Cavill‘s modern Superman will appear in this ‘Supergirl’ movie. Cavill has previously appeared as Superman in ‘Man of Steel’, ‘Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice’ and ‘Justice League’. But after the latter two underperformed at the box office, Warner Brothers is switching things up behind the scenes.
There has been talk of a proper sequel to ‘Man of Steel’ with Cavill in the lead. That was actually the plan before ‘Batman V Superman’ evolved in a different direction. It’s unclear whether a new ‘Superman’ would come before ‘Supergirl’ or if ‘Supergirl’ is a soft reboot of the Super brand.
Perhaps emboldened by ‘Wonder Woman”s strong performance, Warner Brothers is inspired to release more movies with female leads. In addition to ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ next winter, the studio is also developing a ‘Birds of Prey’ movie to be directed by Cathy Yan and a ‘Batgirl’ movie. Both movies were written by Christina Hodson.
Next up for WB/DC is ‘Aquaman’ directed by James Wan, which arrives on December 21. ‘Shazam!’ will be released on April 5, with ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ set for November 1. ‘The Flash’ directed by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein (‘Game Night’), starring Ezra Miller, is rumored to begin production in February. Directed by Todd Phillips, a ‘Joker’ movie starring Joaquin Phoenix is set to begin filming in September, but is unaffiliated with the other DC movies.
