‘GLOW’ star Marc Maron is the latest name attached to Todd Phillips‘ ‘Joker’ film from Warner Brothers. The early-’80s origin story is based on the comic book super villain, but is not connected to the larger DC Universe of movies which includes ‘Wonder Woman’ and the upcoming ‘Aquaman’ and ‘Shazam!’ Maron is confirmed to be in final negotiations, but his role is unknown. He would be joining Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, Frances Conroy and Zazie Beetz. The film has a modest budget of $50 million and is expected to begin filming in September in New York.
Maron was recently heard in the indie dramedy ‘Duck Butter’, which was directed by Miguel Arteta (‘Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day’) and starred Alia Shawkat, Laia Costa, Mae Whitman and Kumail Nanjiani. His voice has also been featured in the animated series ‘Penn Zero: Part-Time Hero’ and ‘Harvey Beaks’. Before ‘GLOW’, Maron starred in his own semi-autobiographical series ‘Maron’ on IFC. He also made appearances on ‘Girls’ and ‘Louie’.
In ‘Joker’, Phoenix will portray the man who will eventually become Batman’s archenemy, whose name will reportedly be Arthur Fleck. Conroy will play his ailing mother, while Beetz plays a single mother with whom Arthur begins a relationship. De Niro is said to be playing a talk show host that plays an important role in Arthur’s development. Rumor has it that Thomas Wayne, Bruce’s father, will also have a role in the movie. It is possible that this is the role that Maron could be up for, but it could also be another role that hasn’t been revealed yet.
The R-rated ‘Joker’ is presently scheduled to open on October 4th, 2019. This will be the first movie to be released under a banner, dubbed either DC Black or DC Dark, to differentiate it from the existing DC Universe of films.
