A big question fans of the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ had when coming out of ‘Avengers: Infinity War‘ was how exactly James Gunn was going to continue the ‘Guardians’ franchise when every member of the team except for Rocket died at the end of ‘Infinity War.’ True, Nebula also survived and it could be a matter of her and Rocket creating a new team in honor of their fallen comrades, but there is also the conundrum of James Gunn being quoted earlier this year saying that ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy: Volume 3’ will be the final movie for this particular iteration of the team, which seemed to state that it would still be the original team members of Star-Lord, Drax, Gamora, Rocket, Groot, and Mantis in Part 3. True, there are a few years of the team’s adventures between the end of ‘Volume 2’ and ‘Infinity War,’ but it just would seem weird to have their third and final adventure be a prequel when we know it would be followed by everyone dying while battling Thanos in ‘Infinity War.’

Luckily for fans (but not so lucky for those not wanting spoilers about who will survive ‘Avengers 4’), James Gunn has taken to Twitter recently to answer questions about his beloved franchise, one of them being when exactly ‘Guardians 3’ would take place:

So it DOES take place after ‘Infinity War,’ meaning that some (or most likely all) of the characters will somehow be saved from death by the end of ‘Avengers 4’ and be able to come back for the 3rd ‘Guardians’ film. Sure, that takes some of the drama out of the next ‘Avengers’ movie, but I’m not sure anyone really believes that ALL of those Marvel heroes that Thanos killed at the end of ‘Infinity War’ are really, permanently dead, especially when the list includes heroes with major new franchises that the studio wants/ needs to capitalize on in the future (looking especially at Black Panther and Spider-Man). So most likely Star-Lord, Drax, Groot, and Mantis will be brought back from the snap, though the fate of Gamora seems a bit more uncertain because of the way she died (though I cannot imagine them doing a ‘Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 3’ with the original cast and not including Gamora, so I’m fairly confident she will be saved as well).

What are your thoughts on the fate of the Guardians? Are you happy the third installment will be post-‘Infinity War?’ Share your thoughts in the comments below!
