Despite news to the contrary being widely reported yesterday, Paramount has come forward to announce that Paul Rudd is NOT being considered for the lead in the movie version of ‘Sonic the Headgehog’. Reportedly, Rudd was being eyed to play the human lead, Tom a policeman who would team up with Sonic (who will be rendered in CGI) to take down the villain Robotnik.
Paramount is still developing the movie based on Sega’s flagship hero who first zipped to prominence in 1991. Newcomer Jeff Fowler is directing and serving as an executive producer. Patrick Casey and Josh Miller (’12 Deadly Days’) provided the screenplay. The director of the first ‘Deadpool’, Tim Miller is serving as an executive producer. ‘Sonic’ is scheduled to be released on November 15th, 2019 and is reported to have a budget of $90 million.
Paramount announced plans last October to craft a movie based on the iconic video game character after Sony had previously developed their own version which never came to fruition.
Paramount is remaining mum on plot details. There also hasn’t been any other casting news or a mention of which other characters from the ‘Sonic’ video games may appear in the film.
‘Sonic’ joins Universal’s ‘Detective Pikachu’, another live-action/CGI animation hybrid based on a video game scheduled to hit theaters. That movie is being directed by ‘Goosebumps” Rob Letterman, who also penned the script with Nicole Perlman. ‘Detective Pikachu’ features the voice of Ryan Reynolds as Pikachu while the adult cast includes Justice Smith, Kathryn Newton, Bill Nighy, Rita Ora, Ken Watanabe, and Suki Waterhouse.
As for Rudd, he remains one of the most in-demand actors in Hollywood. He recently co-starred in Duncan Jones’ Netflix original movie ‘Mute’ and this summer, he will co-star with Steve Coogan in the comedy ‘Ideal Home’, and will headline the thriller ‘The Catcher Was A Spy’. But of course, his biggest upcoming movie is ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’ the next installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, followed by next year’s ‘Avengers 4’.
