There is a lot of speculation out there right now about the MCU in the wake of ‘Avengers: Infinity War,’ and one of the biggest questions has to do with the ‘Captain Marvel’ movie and where she is going to fit into ‘Avengers 4.’ Far more interesting to a lot of fans though, is how the villains she is going to be facing in her movie are going to fit into ‘Avengers 4,’ and the MCU beyond that film. It was confirmed a while back that Captain Marvel would be facing the Skrulls in her stand-alone movie, and since we know it takes place in the 1990’s and Nick Fury will be involved, it stands to reason that Fury also knows about the Skrulls and is aware of the danger they represent. Some are even speculating that at the end of ‘Infinity War’ when Fury and Maria Hill are talking about alien spacecraft, Fury might be concerned that the Skrulls have returned to earth and begun their invasion, hence why he chose to finally contact Captain Marvel again after all of these years.
But how do they actually fit into the next ‘Avengers’ movie? Rumor has it that their role in that film will be small (sorry ‘Avengers: Secret Invasion’ shippers), but that they could help explain Hawkeye’s absence in ‘Infinity War,’ as he could be working as Ronan in Tokyo, hunting down “Yakuza” who are actually Skrull in disguise, a theory with some evidence behind it as Marvel was casting extras for the film who they said needed to be comfortable wearing a facial prosthetic, which is clearly necessary if you were to be transformed into an alien Skrull with make-up. This could all be Marvel laying the groundwork to EVENTUALLY get to a much larger arc with the Skrulls and do a “Secret Invasion’ storyline in the MCU, which could be fascinating, and allow them to bring back any characters they want “from the dead” by having Skrulls either pretend to be them, or claim the person who died was actually a Skrull in disguise.
