hawkeye

Fans have been wondering why Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye has been completely absent from any ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ trailers, posters and magazine covers.  After all, he was a founding member of the Avengers.  (You may also have noticed that Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man is largely missing as well.)  It appears that following their incarceration in ‘Captain America: Civil War’, the characters disperse to return to their loved ones and normal lives.  But that doesn’t mean that they won’t factor into ‘Infinity War’ in some way.

But the directors Joe and Anthony Russo aren’t going to spill too many details.  They simply assured that Hawkeye does have a role in the film and once fans see the finished film, things will be clear.

As Anthony Russo said:

“All will be explained when people see the movie. It’s all tied into the story.”

What do we know so far?  Renner filmed for ‘Avengers 4’, so Hawkeye survives the events of ‘Infinity War’.  Then again, it’s possible that he’ll survive by not being part of the main conflict.  We also know that Linda Cardellini will return in one or both of the two upcoming ‘Avengers’ films as Hawkeye’s wife, Laura Barton.  So there is more story to be told with the arrow-shooting Avenger.  We just don’t know where just yet.

Renner got a new hairdo for either ‘Infinity War’ or ‘Avengers 4’.  There were early rumors that he was hanging up the Hawkeye identity to become Ronin, a guise that has been used by a few Marvel characters in the comics, including Clint Barton.  And it was reported that Renner had filmed some scenes in Japan, so that would reinforce that possibility.

And Renner has stated that he is still open to reprising the Hawkeye role in the future, in a solo movie or possibly even in a Netflix series, although that sounds like an impossibility considering that the TV and film universes have continuously drifted apart.  Plus, Disney is launching its own streaming service so the future of Marvel original material on Netflix is questionable.

But the fact that Renner is still contemplating a future as Hawkeye must mean that Hawkeye HAS a future.

But we’ll have to wait for ‘Infinity War’ to see what that future may be.
