charmed

Well, like it or not, Phoebe, Piper and Prue Halliwell and Paige Matthews are out and a new set of sisters are in for The CW’s planned updating of ‘Charmed’ and while this is a hard reboot, at least one things stays the same– alliteration.  The new show will showcase Macy, Madison and Mel, “three sisters in a college town who discover they are witches.”  The CW and the show’s creative team have released the casting descriptions for the three Pruitt sisters (is the “P” name an homage to the original?) and they also tease their supporting cast.  Macy has a boyfriend named Galvin (a documentary filmmaker), while Mel has a girlfriend Detective Soo Jin.

First things’s first; here are the casting descriptions:

MACY | A witty, intense science nerd, Macy — who is in her late 20s — is a Ph.D. in quantum physics who’s moving with her boyfriend Galvin to Hilltowne, Michigan, to work in the university lab. Macy has reason to believe that she is the sister of Mel and Madison. Her power is telekinesis.

MEL PRUITT | A strong-willed feminist, she feels deeply and is a bit controlling. Mel — who is in her mid 20s and a lesbian —  is the sister of Madison. In the wake of a tragic accident, the grieving Mel becomes angry, defiantly unkempt, even violent, pushing away those who might help her, including her girlfriend, Detective Soo Jin. Mel’s power is time-freezing.

MADISON PRUITT | Mel’s younger sister (she’s 18-ish), an athletic (pilates, cheerleading) college student pledging a sorority, Madison is the opposite of her feminist sister with a desire to fit in. Madison is horrified to learn she is a witch. Her power is hearing people’s thoughts.

As you can see, Macy is not necessarily a true sister, but she believes she is.  TVLine divulged that the cast will also include the ladies’ “devilishly handsome” advisor (or “Whitelighter”) Harry and Madison’s “sensitive loner” ex-beau Brian.

Reportedly producers are open to casting actors of all races for all of the roles, but presumably, all the sisters will be the same race (and hate to say it, will probably be Caucasian), plus Mel’s girlfriend is named Soo Jin, so…

At least the sisters’ powers are in keeping with those in the original.  The idea of Macy not being part of the family immediately may also be a nod to Rose McGowan’s Paige Matthews who was added in Season Four after Shannon Doherty/Prue’s departure.

The new series has not been embraced by the cast of the original, most notably Holly Marie Combs who played Piper on all eight seasons.

The reboot will be executive produced by ‘Jane the Virgin”s creator and showrunner Jennie Synder Urman, Jessica O’Toole, Amy Rardin, Brad Silberling.  O’Toole and Rardin are writing the ‘Charmed’ pilot, while Silberling will direct.

Stay tuned for more updates.  What do you think of these casting descriptions?  Are you intrigued by the reboot?
