Kendrick Lamar was nominated for several Grammy Awards this year and won four, Best Rap Album for ‘Damn’, Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance for ‘Humble’, and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for ‘Loyalty’.  What’s next for the rap star?  He’s curating the soundtrack for Marvel’s ‘Black Panther’.  His single ‘All The Stars’ featuring SZA, is the first track released and is used in the newest trailer for ‘Black Panther’ which debuted during the awards ceremony.

‘Black Panther: The Album’ will be released on February 9, prior to the release of the film.  A second single has been released, ‘King’s Dead’ by Jay Rock, featuring Lamar, Future and James Black.  Lamar and Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith worked directly with director Ryan Coogler to tailor the soundtrack to the film’s needs.

Coogler previously announced:

“I am honored to be working with such an incredible artist whose work has been so inspirational, and whose artistic themes align with those we explore in the film.  I can’t wait for the world to hear what Kendrick and TDE have in store.”

This marks the first Marvel Studios film to feature a soundtrack of pop songs crafted specifically for it.  Of course, everyone remembers the “Mix Tapes” compiled by James Gunn for the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ movies.  Other Marvel film soundtracks have consisted of instrumental scores.

Fandango reports that ‘Black Panther’ is the second-most anticipated film of the year, following ‘Avengers: Infinity War’.  Within 24 hours of release, ‘Black Panther’ tickets became the fastest-selling ever for a Marvel movie.

‘Black Panther’ directed by Ryan Coogler stars Chadwick Boseman, Angela Bassett, Winston Duke, Martin Freeman, Danai Gurira, Michael B. Jordan, Daniel Kaluuya, Lupita Nyong’o, Andy Serkis, Forest Whitaker and Letitia Wright and strikes theaters on February 16, 2018.
