Apparently, all is not looking well in a galaxy, far, far away. ‘The Last Jedi’ has done well enough in theaters despite the divisive fan reviews (I still stand by my original thoughts that while the movie is not perfect, it does not deserve the hatred it is receiving from some fans), but it seems the real trouble for Lucasfilm will hit in May of 2018 when the ‘Solo’ movie is released. Already plagued by production issues which included the firing of the original directors Phil Miller and Chris Lord, hiring Ron Howard to take his place, and massive reshoots, it seems both Disney and Lucasfilm are preparing themselves for the worst.
According to ScreenGeek, who claim they received the information from a source close to the film’s production:
“Disney is bracing themselves for the Han Solo movie to bomb. They were worried about it before all The Last Jedi controversy, but now they’re essentially writing ‘Solo’ off. The lead actor, Alden Ehrenreich, can’t act, and they had a dialogue coach on hand for all of his scenes. On top of that, the script is unworkable. It’s going to be a car crash.”
Now let’s bear in mind, this is only one source and does not mean conclusively that this movie will suck. Lucasfilm has a fairly good record so far under Disney, and Ron Howard is directing the film, and the man knows what he is doing. That being said, this is not good news to hear. Especially when we have seen nothing from the movie so far, though rumor has it we will finally be getting some kind of teaser in the next week or so. But Alden Ehrenreich being problematic in the lead role would certainly explain a lot, especially with the firing of Phil Miller and Chris Lord, as he was their choice. Bringing in a seasoned veteran director like Ron Howard was thought to be able to coax a better performance out of the actor. And it would explain the DEMAND for such massive reshoots, as they could have deemed all of Ehrenreich’s footage under Miller and Lord unusable as their standards for the actors may not have been that high (which is unfair I know, because they aren’t bad directors either, but who knows?).
In the end, we won’t really know what is going on until we get some footage from the movie, and even then we won’t know the full story until ‘Solo’ finally hits theaters in May, but personally I am keeping my fingers crossed that Ron Howard and Lucasfilm manage to pull this all together and this source is wrong. I love Han Solo and have long wanted this movie to be a success.
