Taiki Waititi

It seems that Lucasfilm President and the woman protecting and guiding the ‘Star Wars’ films, Kathleen Kennedy, has informally offered Taiki Waititi a job in the franchise, at least according to the latest gossip from Newshub. After telling Newshub that Waititi would be “perfect” for a ‘Star Wars’ film after seeing ‘Thor: Ragnarok,’ Kennedy went onto to state that:

“I would love for him to direct a Star Wars movie…I think he has exactly the right sensibility. It was very exciting to see him step into the Marvel universe and do such an amazing job with Thor.”

She followed that statement by asking Newshub to let Waititi know and laughed and nodded yes when asked if it was a genuine job offer. Which is lucky, because Waititi is already down for the gig, as he had already told Uproxx in a recent interview that he would say yes if offered a ‘Star Wars’ film. In his words:

“I’m not an idiot. Who would actually say no to Star Wars?”

However, I’m not sure that is a definite yes though, as Waititi is also quoted as telling the New York Times the following:

“That particular franchise seems really hard. There’s not much room for someone like me.”

Waititi might be referencing all of the other up and coming, more indie-type directors that Lucasfilm had been trying to work with of late, few of whom had successfully completed their films before being shown the door by Kennedy and being replaced, which is sure to make any new director for a ‘Star Wars’ film a little wary, and a little worried that their style may not mesh all that well with what Lucasfilm ultimately wants for their movies. Still, Marvel can be a bit demanding with their films as well and Waititi not only managed to survive, but thrive with ‘Thor: Ragnarok.’  Perhaps he is indeed the right man for a jaunt into the realms of a galaxy far, far away. Only time will tell.

What would you think of Taiki Waititi directing a ‘Star Wars’ film? Does his style fit? Or do you think Lucasfilm would ultimately be unhappy as he might skew a bit too wacky for ‘Star Wars?’ Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below!
