Wolverine: The Long Night

Podcasts are awesome for those of us with commutes and now Marvel New Media has teamed up with Stitcher to get in on the action by delivering us a scripted story titled ‘Wolverine: The Long Night’! The Stitcher network has an impressive resume behind them including ‘Heaven’s Gate’, ‘Katie Couric’, and ‘The Paris Review’ which makes them a great platform to share the new podcast. The story is to be spread across a 10-episode series and is set to drop in the spring of 2018. At this time it is planned to be released “exclusively on Stitcher Premium” though that is a limited exclusivity agreement which will see the show available on all podcast platforms in the fall of 2018.

Knowing Marvel these days, you can tell that they are going to enlist an impressive set of voice talent for the series and have assembled notable actors who include, “Richard Armitage (‘The Hobbit’), Scott Adsit (’30 Rock’), Bob Balaban (‘Moonrise Kingdom’), and Brian Stokes Mitchell (‘Mr. Robot’).”

The story’s synopsis is below:

The “Wolverine: The Long Night” story is a captivating hybrid of mystery and the larger-scale fantasy of the Marvel Universe. It follows agents Sally Pierce (Celia Keenan-Bolger) and Tad Marshall (Ato Essandoh) as they arrive in the fictional town of Burns, Alaska, to investigate a series of murders and quickly discover the town lives in fear of a serial killer. The agents team up with deputy Bobby Reid (Andrew Keenan-Bolger) to investigate their main suspect, Logan (Richard Armitage). Their search leads them on a fox hunt through the mysterious and corrupt town.

A podcast based story is something new for Marvel and it should be interesting to see if they are able to engage the medium as well as they have with the Marvel Cinematic Universe on the big screen. The actors will be recorded in full surround-sound so that anyone with the right speaker setup can take advantage of being able to “hear” the voice talent moving around them.

According to Dan Silver, vice president, head of platforms and content for Marvel New Media:

“‘Wolverine: The Long Night’ brings our fans a whole new way to experience our iconic characters and the Marvel Universe. This tremendous cast will bring a thrilling level of intrigue and drama to our listeners. The character of Logan and this landscape make it the ideal premiere vehicle for us, and we’re excited to continue to explore the dynamic possibilities of the podcast medium.”

Erik Diehn, CEO of Midroll Media, a podcast industry leader and the parent company of Stitcher added that:

“Podcasting is an incredible, intimate medium that’s perfect for telling stories, and I can’t think of a better partner with whom to push the boundaries of scripted podcasts than Marvel. They make every translation of their rich universe of characters into new media fresh and interesting while still retaining the feel and spirit of the original comics, and, as a Marvel fan, I’m proud that we’ve helped them do it again in podcasting. The arrival of Wolverine and his many fans to podcasts and Stitcher is truly a signal that this medium is a major part of the American media landscape.”

The two studios have put together a writing team from both comic and podcast fame to deliver a cohesive story that will see the script by Ben Percy (‘The Wilding’,’Red Moon’) and be directed by Brendan Baker (‘Love & Radio’). Sound design is being tackled by Chloe Prasinos (‘Reply All’) while Daniel Fink from Marvel and Jenny Radelet of Stitcher will be producing.

With an all-star team putting this together, podcast listeners everywhere are going to want to tune in to www.wolverinepodcast.com when it debuts in the Spring of 2018! You can currently sign up for the mailing list to be notified when it will be live at Stitcher Premium.
