rian johnson knights of the old republic

Once we learned that Rian Johnson was going to be doing a new ‘Star Wars’ trilogy everyone has been speculating what it could be about. While Johnson has stressed that he wants to explore new territory, a popular fan theory has been that he could be tackling a live-action version of ‘Knights of the Old Republic’. Perhaps theory should actually be wishful thinking there as this is by no means where he plans on taking his new story.

I mean, even wishful thinking should have acknowledged that the announcement stated that Johnson would “introduce new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored.” The Knights of the Old Republic have been explored in a video game already, even if the game is no longer considered canon.

That isn’t to say it is a bad idea, just not what he is interested in telling. When he was asked about it at a recent ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi‘ press event he stated that:

“Oh, they love Knights of the Old Republic. I played that game when it first came out and it was like, god, I loved it. Yeah, that’s a fantastic game. And I understand it, the instinct to automatically go to something that you know and love, that you’ve already seen.

To me what’s really fun is the notion of what new stuff are we gonna see, what new stories can we tell?”

Technicalities of the game not being canon aside, it isn’t what we should be holding out hope for. However, there is always the chance it could see the light of day in another standalone film or perhaps even a live-action television series.

Are you sad to hear that Rian Johnson won’t be tackling the ‘Knights of the Old Republic’ in his “Star Wars” trilogy? Do you feel that it is a story which should be told as a movie, trilogy, or ongoing television series? Share your thoughts below!
