While David Lynch isn’t fully on board yet it looks like we might not have to wait another 30 years for a new season of ‘Twin Peaks.’ At this time it looks as if Mark Frost is thinking about coming back and Showtime is “musing as well”! While Lynch hasn’t signed on quite yet, he hasn’t ruled it out. The idea of a fourth season has fans rabid for more with the cliffhanger of the third season. No one was expecting the cast and crew to tie up all of the loose strings, but there was a lot left on the table to explore!
In a recent interview, Frost was asked if he’d be open to coming back to the series and according to the nearly full co-creator of the series:
“I haven’t decided yet. I think it’s still an open question and it’s one that we’re looking at and one that I think Showtime is musing as well.”
With Frost’s involvement, we wouldn’t necessarily need Lynch back in the director’s chair though I’m sure everyone, Frost included, would prefer him to be on board. In fact, Lynch said (as recently as September) that he hadn’t ruled out another season and it would just depend on how long it would take to develop.
As to why ‘Twin Peaks’ was even able to come back? It all happened when the pair revisited the last episode in 2012:
“The anchor [for ‘Twin Peaks: The Return’] and starting point came from the moment we revisited the last episode of the original show. Cooper’s dilemma of when Good Cooper trapped Bad Cooper [both played by Kyle MacLachlan] out and that weirdly prescient line of the spirit of Laura’s whispering to Cooper, ‘I will see you again in 25 years.’ That was the springboard to the story, and that is where I saw the opening to bring us back, and that is what I proposed to David when we got back together in 2012 and said this is where we can pick up the thread.”
While we all know it took a little longer to get things on track, I’m sure everyone was quite happy getting another damn fine cup of coffee! As to when the series might be serving up another one? Even if another season is to happen I wouldn’t hold my breath for it being next year:
“It’s something you have to think long and hard about. We’ll make the decision when the time is right. There certainly is no sense of urgency about it.”
Outside of an aging cast and crew who have already lost too many members far too young that’s true. We waited decades between season 2 and 3, so another couple of years would be a short wait for a Season 4 release.
