hellboy

Three more cast members have joined the cast of Neill Marshall’s ‘Hellboy’ reboot.  First, here is the film’s synopsis:

Hellboy comes to England, where he must defeat Merlin’s consort and Nimue the Blood Queen. But their battle will bring about the end of the world, a fate he desperately tries to turn away.

Factoring into the tale is the Osiris Club, “an ancient English club dedicated to uncovering supernatural mysteries.”  Sophie Okonedo plays Lady Hatton, the Osiris Club’s seer.  Brian Gleeson will play Lord Adam Glaren, a high ranking member of the Osiris Club.  Perhaps in a more sinister role, Alistair Petrie will portray Merlin, the husband of the film’s main antagonist Nimue the Blood Queen, who will be played by Milla Jovovich.

In addition to Jovovich, this trio joins ‘Stranger Things” David Harbour as the titular hero, Ian McShane as Professor Broom, Daniel Dae Kim as Ben Daimio, Penelope Mitchell as Ganeida and Sasha Lane as Alice Monaghan.  Kim of course, recently replaced Ed Skrein, a Caucasian actor who was hired to play Daimio, an Asian American character.  (In Skrein’s defense, he was unaware of the character’s ethnicity in the comics.)

For ‘Doctor Who’ fans, Okonedo voiced the companion Alison Cheney in the animated miniseries ‘Doctor Who: Scream of the Shalka’ before appearing in live action as Liz Ten in two episode in 2010.  She also portrayed Winnie Mandela in ‘Mrs. Mandela,’ a TV biopic. She has an extensive TV career but has appeared in many films including ‘Hotel Rwanda’, ‘Æon Flux’ and ‘After Earth’.

Brian Gleeson appeared in ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’ and a few higher profile films lately.  Most recently, he appeared in the controversial Darren Aronofsky/Jennifer Lawrence horror thriller ‘mother!’.  Prior to that, he was in the acclaimed heist flick ‘Logan Lucky’ as well as the video game adaptation ‘Assassin’s Creed’.

Like Okonedo, Alistair Petrie has numerous TV credits to his name, mostly in the UK including appearances on ‘Sherlock’ and ‘Whitechapel’.  He has also appeared in films such as ‘Cloud Atlas’, ‘Victor Frankenstein’, ‘Rush’ and ‘The Night Manager’.  His most high-profile film role was as General Draven in ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’.

‘Hellboy’ has not yet begun production but is due to hit theaters at an undisclosed time next year.

How do you think this cast is shaping up?  What do you think of the proposed storyline?
