Fans of the ‘Hellboy‘ comic should be thrilled to learn that Sasha Lane (‘American Honey’) is in final negotiations to join the cast of the film as Alice Monaghan! Joining the reboot would have her working with David Harbour as Hellboy, Ian McShane as Doctor Broom, and Milla Jovovich as The Blood Queen! There will be a lot riding on director Neil Marshall to get this one right, especially as series creator Mike Mignola will be having a more hands off approach this time around.
Alice is a long-standing character in the comics who Hellboy rescued from fairies which had kidnapped her. Her first appeared was in ‘The Corpse’. She was rescued as an infant and has had an unnaturally long life as well as other attributes due to spending so much time with these supernatural creatures. In the film, it is unclear if she will be a member of the B.P.R.D., someone imprisoned by the medieval sorceress The Blood Queen, or help in some other way. It should also be noted that she is also a strong romantic interest to ‘Hellboy’ which was truly explored in ‘Hellboy: The Storm and the Fury’ comic. Could love begin to bloom in the first installment of the rebooted franchise?
Alice was also intimately involved in the last story of Hellboy before he ends up dying and moving on to Hell. If they do go the route of a trilogy and not a cinematic universe, it is a tale that could be adapted in the final movie.
With the film being set to shoot in September, I suspect we’ll be hearing more casting news in the near future. While this is primarily a Hellboy adventure and not a B.P.R.D. mission, we do know that the agency will be involved so some key characters will likely be cast prior to the film’s production begins.
