A Legend of Tomorrow is about to become a Legend of Yesterday. Victor Garber, who plays Professor Martin Stein, is due to depart ‘Legends of Tomorrow’ in January in order to reunite with Bernadette Peters for the Broadway production of ‘Hello, Dolly’, taking over for departing David Hyde Pierce and Bette Midler. Garber first appeared as Stein on ‘The Flash’ in February 2015, recurring on that show until the launch of ‘Legends of Tomorrow’. Initially, his character merged with Ronnie Raymond, played by Robbie Amell, to become Firestorm the Nuclear Man. After Ronnie’s death, he shared the Firestorm identity with Jefferson “Jax” Jackson, played by Franz Drameh.
Stein’s exit from ‘Legends’ was set up in the season three premiere ‘Aruba-Con’, when he learned that his daughter Lily (Christina Brucato) was expecting. Stein agreed to rejoin his ragtag team on the condition he could leave when the time came for her to give birth. He is expected to appear through the autumn finale ‘Crisis on Earth-X’ part of the four-way crossover with ‘Supergirl’, ‘The Flash’ and ‘Arrow’.
Garber’s musical theater background has been utilized in the Arrowverse for the musical episode of ‘The Flash’, ‘Duet’ which aired in March of this year.
Garber is said to remain listed as a series regular even though he most likely won’t appear in the second half of the season. The nature of the show, not to mention its large cast, should allow for him to return after a sabbatical. It’s unclear what will be done with Jefferson. Without Martin, he won’t be able to become Firestorm… unless they figure out a way to do that without Stein present. Although even without superpowers, Jefferson’s expanding role as the team’s engineer makes him valuable in another way.
Are you sad to see Garber’s Martin Stein depart? How would you like to see ‘Legends’ handle Firestorm?
