nick fury samuel l jackson

While speaking with Yahoo Movies UK recently about his latest film, ‘The Hitman’s Bodyguard,’ Samuel L. Jackson spoke about the next appearance of his character, Nick Fury, in the MCU, dispelling some assumptions he had made previously about when he would next be seen:

“I wasn’t in the ‘superhero argument’ movie [‘Captain America: Civil War’], I’m not in ‘Avengers 3 and 4’. They’re shooting them now, and they haven’t called me yet. They wouldn’t let me go to ‘Black Panther’-ville, so it’s kinda like how you gonna make a black Marvel movie and not let Nick Fury show up in it?!”

It is very odd that they are holding him back from all of these movies, as in the comics Nick Fury does play a small role in the ‘Infinity War’ storyline, even if it is more narrative and just to tell what SHIELD is doing to keep Earth safe while the battle rages in the cosmos. But maybe from that point of view, they figured he is only one human being, and he did not actually have to be part of the war with Thanos because it was far out of his league. As for his being left out of ‘Black Panther,’ that is anyone’s guess, as clearly Jackson wanted to be a part of the film, and with Fury’s absence from the MCU proper these days, it seems pretty easy to shoehorn him somewhere into the Wakanda storyline, even for a brief cameo.

My thoughts are that this all has to do either with the limited number of appearances left on his original contract, or something to do with his role in ‘Captain Marvel’ where he will be playing a young Nick Fury and maybe wanting to hold onto his character for that story, claiming that Fury was still involved in the Captain Marvel plotline even during all the Thanos and Black Panther stuff because the Captain Marvel through-line was THAT important. Who knows? He may yet still get a last minute call to the set for any of these movies, with Marvel just wanting to keep his appearance secret.

Do you have any theories on why Fury would be left out of the next 2 ‘Avengers’ movies and ‘Black Panther?’ Feel free to share any thoughts you have in the comments below!
