If you thought that the casting choice of Tilda Swinton as The Ancient One in ‘Doctor Strange’ was controversial imagine her playing the part of Pennywise the Dancing Clown in ‘It‘. The idea might seem far-fetched but director Andrés Muschietti had been considering her taking this iconic role from Stephen King’s novel. We all know that Bill Skarsgård ended up with the part and the recent trailers look like he may be filling Tim Curry’s clown shoes pretty well, but Swinton was at one point one of the leading contenders.

In fact, she was the lead contender as Muschietti was looking to have her:

“She wasn’t available. No, no I swear to god. She was not. We had a slot to shoot the movie and she wasn’t available so she didn’t even audition. But of course, we all thought about it.”

Swinton can actually swap into roles like this pretty well and you have to wonder what Pennywise would have ended up looking like if she had been available for the part. I imagine that the clown which has terrified generations of horror fans wouldn’t just have looked different but had an overall different tone if she had been the one bringing ‘It’ to life. However, with her schedule not making her available for the first film that would have been a huge wrench in the works of wanting to film the sequel so soon after it is released.

Are you sad that Tilda Swinton didn’t end up as Pennywise or happy that Bill Skarsgård will be portraying him? What changes do you think would have occurred if she did end up in the film? Can you think of any other actor or actress which might have been good for the part? Share your thoughts below!
