It may be Saturday, but Throwback Thursday has come early thanks to Marvel Studios. During their highly anticipated Hall H panel, the House of Ideas has released some radical details for Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck’s ‘Captain Marvel’.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the first standalone female-led film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be set in the 90s. Not only will star Brie Larson likely be surrounded by the sights and sounds of Boyz II Men, chain wallets, neon windbreakers, and Sony Discmen, but we’ll see a younger version of co-star Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury, complete with both eyes. That’s right, True Believers! We’ll get to spend some quality time with pre-eyepatch Fury.

And as if that weren’t enough, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige came out with another huge announcement. The Marvel mastermind shared that the leader of the Carol Corps will face off against the Skrulls in the upcoming Phase Three film. Present in the pages of Marvel Comics since 1961’s ‘Fantastic Four’ #2, the Skrulls are shape-shifting aliens that are perpetually at war with the Kree, who not only have been seen in the MCU before but who also create the technology that bestows Carol Danvers with her superpowers.

Along with this announcement, Feige also revealed some concept art of Captain Marvel and the Skrulls:

While the revelation of some villainous aliens may not sound like a big deal initially, one has to consider the movie rights. Because of their association with the Fantastic Four, the Skrulls were likely grouped in with the film rights of Marvel’s First Family that belong to 20th Century Fox. However, in this day and age where ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ exists (and was extremely successful) because of a collaboration between studios, it would seem that all the characters in Marvel’s stable have a better chance than ever to appear in the MCU. Although, one has to wonder what Marvel gave up in order to use Fox’s Skrulls.

We may get answers in the days following the annual pop culture gathering, but for now, let us know what you think about the latest details for ‘Captain Marvel’ in the comment section.
