After a lot of rumors and speculation on the subject, Deadline Hollywood has recently confirmed that Samuel L. Jackson will indeed be returning to the MCU for a role in Marvel’s first female-led superhero film, ‘Captain Marvel.’
Jackson’s character, the super-spy Nick Fury, has been an integral part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe since its inception back in 2008 when the first ‘Iron Man’ film came out. With his contract seemingly coming to a close when he completes his final two films (‘Avengers 3’ and ‘Avengers 4’), many have wondered whether he would continue to take part in the sprawling MCU (or if he would even survive the “Infinity Wars” which would engulf those ‘Avengers’ films). This news seems to confirm not only Nick Fury’s survival but also the fact that Samuel L. Jackson is game for more Marvel movies if he sees one he is particularly interested in with a script and/or story that he wants to be a part of. With ‘Captain Marvel’ rumored to be an origin story of sorts, there are few other characters better suited to shepherd a new hero through their early stages than Nick Fury who was there for Tony Stark during his early days as Iron Man, helped form the Avengers, and was Captain America’s back-up during the Hydra battles in Washington DC.
Of course, no one is quite sure how large a role Jackson will have in the film, but it is fun to see him reunited with Brie Larson, who he starred with in ‘Kong: Skull Island‘ this past year, and who he will also be working with in her upcoming directorial debut, ‘Unicorn Store.’ If we’re lucky we might get more information about the film during Marvel’s Hall H panel at San Diego Comic Con this year, but with all of the MCU films coming out before ‘Captain Marvel,’ they might not have time to drop any more hints about the film which is so early in pre-production.
