Carrie Fisher’s Princess Leia is a legend and one of the most awesome female action heroes of all time, but she tended to play a secondary role in the original trilogy. Rey, played by Daisy Ridley, in ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ set a new standard when it comes to the female protagonists of the ‘Star Wars’ film series, as a more active participant and she opened the door for Felicity Jones’ Jyn Erso in ‘Rogue One’.
Ridley will take an even bigger role in this winter’s ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ in which, one assumes, she will BE the Last Jedi, based on the ending of ‘The Force Awakens’, but we can’t know for certain at this point.
But Rey will be front and center in the new ‘Forces of Destiny’ initiative, which will feature larger doll-sized action figures meant to appeal to all the young girls who are just now being introduced to the franchise. (And *ahem* maybe some grown men.)
The toy line will also have a series of animated shorts to promote it, focusing on the female aspect of the ‘Star Wars’ universe. Daisy Ridley will provide the voice of Rey in her shorts and will be joined by Jones as Jyn, Vanessa Marshall as Hera Syndulla, Tiya Sircar as Sabine Wren, and Ashley Eckstein as Ahsoka Tano, as well as Lupita Nyong’o as Maz Kanata who serves as the narrator of the ‘Forces of Destiny’ narrator.
Ridley, Jones and Nyong’o all portrayed their characters on the big screen. John Boyega will also provide the voice of Finn. Marshall, Sicar and Eckstein voiced their characters on their respective animated series. Shelby Young will provide the voice of Princess Leia Organa. Padme Amidala will also get her focused episodes, but so far her voice actor hasn’t been revealed.
