The saga continues as another twist has hit fans trying to figure out just what is going on with Sony’s planned Spider-verse spin-off movies and whether or not they will exist alongside the MCU Spider-Man in the same universe. After the most recent news which seemed to close the book on the case with Marvel’s Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal both commenting that the two universes would be separate, a new interview, with BOTH present, has just contradicted that statement, leaving the door wide-open for movies like Sony’s ‘Venom’ to exist right there in the MCU. According to Pascal’s recent interview with Fandom, where Kevin Feige was present and able to nod in agreement:
According to Pascal’s recent interview with Fandom, where Kevin Feige was present and able to nod in agreement:
“First, there is Spider-Man happily in the place where he’s supposed to be which is in the Marvel Universe. I think everything comes from that. This is the signpost, the tentpole, the signature and… the other movies that Sony’s going to make, in their relationship to this [MCU] Spider-Man, take place in this [separate Sony] world. Although you’re not going to see them in the Marvel Universe, it’s in the same reality.”
Feige chimed in next saying Pascal’s response was “…the perfect answer.”
So what does this mean? It sounds like Marvel gets to have their cake and eat it too. The Sony movies will exist in the same “reality,” but if they suck, Marvel never has to acknowledge them in their own canon, and eventually can just pretend they never happened. If they turn out to be amazing, they can do cross-overs and pretend that was the plan all along, and look brilliant for having done so. And what does Sony get out of it? They get to have their own Spidey-verse loosely tied to the MCU, which can reference the very popular Tom Holland Spider-Man, and who knows, maybe even get some nods in the MCU itself. It is probably the best situation either studio can get at the moment for what they want, and most likely the deals are still being struck behind the scenes, so more of this could change in the coming weeks. But I think I’m ok with this

But I think I’m ok with this idea, because let’s be honest, doing a whole universe of Spider-Man’s allies and villains without Spider-Man himself sounded insane, and I would hate for there never to be a possibility of Spidey being able to face Venom in the MCU.
What are your thoughts on this new twist? Do you think it could really work? Or are both studios just trying to save face? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
