With the third film of the new ‘Planet of the Apes’ trilogy on the way to theaters soon, Matt Reeves is on the PR train promoting his latest movie. Luckily for all of us superhero movie fans, he has shown that he is more than happy to talk somewhat about his next project following the ‘Apes’ movie, which is different than most directors nowadays who give somewhat standard answers when asked about new tentpole movies they are about to start.

During a recent interview with New Trailer Buzz, Reeves spoke on his own unique perspective on the Batman character, his desired vision for the new movie, and what drove him to want to direct the new film:

“One of the reasons I was drawn to [The Batman] is that I had a similar obsession to Batman when I was younger that I had with the Apes series, which I was obsessed with. I see a parallel emotionally between Caesar and Batman, in that they’re both tortured and trying to sort of grapple within themselves to try and do the right thing in a very imperfect and, to some degree, corrupt world. It’s really that emotionality that I’m interested…In all of my films, what I try to do, in an almost Hitchcockian sense, is use the camera and use the storytelling so that you become that character, and you emphasize with that point of view. There’s a chance to do an almost noir-driven, detective version of Batman that is point-of-view driven in a very, very powerful way, that hopefully is going to connect you to what’s going on inside of his head and inside of his heart.”

I like that Reeves’s vision is something different for Batman than what we have seen on screen so far without losing the essence of the comic-book character or who he is, unlike the more recent version where suddenly Batman is a killer just because Snyder wanted to see him “darker.” And the noir, detective Batman has long been a fan favorite version of the character, which is a large part of why the ‘Batman: The Animated Series’ show was so popular back in the 1990s, as that show relied heavily on that feel for Batman.

What are your thoughts on the kind of ‘Batman’ movie Reeves wants to make? Are you excited? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
