WARNING: Casting information and potential mild spoilers for ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ lay ahead. If you’d like to avoid learning this type of stuff, then the time to stop reading is now!
As we move closer and closer to the wide-release premiere of ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming,’ more information starts to slip out about the film. This is “par for the course,” as by now some initial screenings have happened, critics start to “accidentally” mention some important points in their reviews, press information is dispensed by Marvel, and the like. While it’s no secret that Donald Glover is in the film, the information on who he is playing has now been revealed.
Coming directly from Marvel’s press-junket info, Glover is listed in the film’s credits as portraying Aaron Davis. This name may not seem like much to the casual fan, but Spidey comic fans will take a more direct note: this is the name of the alter-ego of the villain known as The Prowler in the “Ultimate Marvel” line of comics. Although the Prowler has existed in Marvel’s books since the 1960s, the Aaron Davis version of the character is a bit more recent and may be a more specific connection to Glover than we currently know.
Aaron Davis, in the comics, is the uncle of Miles Morales, who is the Spider-Man of the Ultimate Marvel universe. Glover has gone on record in the past stating that he wanted to play Morales on the big-screen, and fans have long seemed interested in seeing Morales in some form as well. Could this character be a way to bridge that gap, or is this just a case of Marvel simply tapping minor characters from their copious resources of what already exists on the printed page?
Fans don’t have long to wait to find out; ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming is heading to the big screen in just a few short weeks!
‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ will debut in US theaters on July 7, 2017.
